Boschi in città
Research and Map Design
APRIL 2021
Waiting for the completion of the "Forestami" project - promoted by the Metropolitan City of Milan -
which provides planting of 3 million trees by 2030, we investigate how many trees are currently in the city area and where they are located.
A "trees map" was created using a 3d square binning, where the color and the height of each square cell were determined by the number of trees that fall within a 10x10 sq meters cell grid.
Binning is useful here because multiple elements at close locations would appear to overlap if we had used a dot map,
but with square bins, is easily identify the areas with a high number of trees.
This made it possible to analyze the number of trees for each city district and to create a sort of ranking that shows which is the "greenest".
All the data - open data - used were downloaded from the Geoportal of the Municipality of Milan, processed with Qgis and displayed with Kepler.gl.
